Trg Republike (Republic Square) is the name of the largest square in Split (see map)
, surrounded by buildings in neo-Renaissance style on three sides, while its south side opens up towards the harbour and offers a magnificent view of the sea. The square is also known by the name Prokurative
, as local people call it.
Its construction began in the 19th century, and the surrounding buildings were modelled after the Venetian architecture of the same period, this is why many say that walking across the square gives an impression of walking through Venice.
The square is usually not very busy during the low season, but it comes very much alive in the summer, when many concerts and other cultural events take place here.
